Kanti I. Patel , 56, had $6 in his pocket when he arrived in the United States in 1972.
Now Patel owns five Treasure Valley hotels, and he´ll be recognized Tuesday as one of Idaho´s leading entrepreneurs when he receives the U.S. Small Business Administration´s Idaho Minority Business Person of The Year Award.
"This just means that in this country you can do anything," said Patel, who also has hotels in Portland and Seattle. "But when they first told me about this award, I didn´t believe it."
Becoming a hotelier was the farthest thing from Patel´s mind when he immigrated to the U.S. to attend Heald College of Engineering in San Francisco. The plan was to add a degree in electronics engineering to the degree in chemistry he´d earned at Sardar Patel University in Gujarat , India.
Coming to the U.S. was not an easy decision. It meant leaving behind his wife, Bharti , who was about to deliver a daughter he would not see for 14 years, he recalls.
He said he got into the hotel business - leasing the 45-unit Oxford Hotel in downtown Oakland, Calif. -
as a way of staying in this country.
"Immigration law said that if you invested in a business, and had employees, you could get your green card," he said.
He became a U.S. citizen in 1990.
He arrived in Boise in 1979 and immediately purchased the Holiday Motel, 5416 Fairview. In quick succession followed the Capri Motel, Econo Lodge and Budget Inn Motel, all on Fairview.
"That´s my lucky street," he said.
He has also built the Holiday Inn Express Hotel and Comfort Inn Suites in Meridian.
He was nominated for the annual SBA award by Wells Fargo vice president and senior business relationship manager Heide Finnegan , who calls his a "great success story."
"Kanti Patel is a good example of how hard work and commitment can lead to success," Finnegan said. "Kanti also involves his family in the business operations and he gives of himself to the communities he serves."
Patel credits his success to a simple business philosophy.
"You work hard and get the right people to do the right jobs," he said.
Hotelier Kanti I. Patel said the award he won Friday shows that "in this country you can do anything."
